For those who did not know, the net art open exhibitions were... fake! Below is the explanation from the organizers. Press release:

------------------------
ANNOUNCEMENT

Irish Museum of Modern Art website a fake

In 2002 and 2003 the Irish Museum of Modern Art held the Net Art Open exhibitions which many net artists participated in. Well it probably comes as no surprise to find out that irishmuseumofmodernart.com was a fake.

The site was an intervention by Irish artists Arthur X Doyle and Conor McGarrigle conceived as an intervention to protest against IMMA's lack of engagement with net art.

The Net Art Open exhibitions, however, were a real attempt to look at new ways of curating net art in an institutional setting. In order for them to succeed we obviousely couldn't come out and say that it was a fake outright
so we included many, many clues as to the real intent so that artists submitting would know the score. While we had no qualms about conning museum curators this was not an attempt to fool artists. From general feedback we received the fact that it was a fake probably increased participation.

The site is now retired but has been fully archived at Stunned stunned.org/imma which includes the full background to the site, press coverage and site referrer logs.

all the best

Conor

Atlantic Center for the Arts is not directly related to New Media, but their residency program is such a great opportunity for artists at large that I find it worthwhile to mention their upcoming artist in residence schedule. Visit their info page to find out who will be part of their program this year.

Are net artists avantgarde? If you compare Ola Pehrson's latest artwork, NASDAQ vocal index 2003, with Igor Stromajer's net art piece Oppera Teorettikka Internettikka from 1999 you are tempted to say yes. Both works show a lot of similarities as the use of choirs to sing code and the presentation in a performance like setting. The only difference is that where Stromeijer's piece is about singing html code, Peherson's is about singing stock market prices. As net artists are more familiar with code (most of them code their work themselves) it is easy to assume that this kind of works will be made sooner by net artists, hence avant garde. This said I still would rather go for the idea that some things are just in the air (zeitgeist). Anyway what you see in both works is the tendency to translate abstract code into a more understandable language. Something we probably will see more in the near future.

Whalelane issue No.8 is out with some really great stuff -- including material from none other than Garrett Lynch (one of Net Art Review's contributing writers). Experience mail story his 2.5 hours audio file piece presenting e-mail correspondence between a man and a woman in different places in the world. The audio file is read by three robotic-like monotone voices representing the man, the woman, and a narrator (who reads the official headers of each e-mail).

An Eerie feeling came over me as I experienced the intimacy that is sensed inbetween the lines of text when these are read out-loud by the voices; such sensibility takes on an unexpected intensity due to the dry monotone quality of the sound signifying a lack of emotion, while the text implies otherwise.

There are eight writers contributing to this issue. The official press release is below:

Genetically Modified Culture

artofficial-online.com

Contact: artofficial2@yahoo.com

“The foundation of profitability is superior genetics”Monsanto PR statement 2000

This installment of ACM's Contextin' Art focuses on the relationships between genetic science, information technolog (IT) and culture. As the difference between theoretical science and its commercial application becomes increasingly blurred, the direction of research itself becomes a site of contention. Acknowledging this, the interests of capital continue to develop a culture of consent in all domains. There have been a number of art exhibitions designed to “discuss” the philosophical implications of genetic and information technologies over the past few years. Many of these activities aim the discourse at a metaphysical future that is simultaneously a posthuman utopia and an irreversible destruction of Nature, while deflecting the material and ideological conditions converging in the present. The struggle over genetically modified foods is but one aspect of the current situation that represents capital’s further expansion of power over all aspects of life. The works included here are not rejections of biotechnology or the science of genetics, but are instead offerings of critical engagement with these technologies and the ideologies powering them.

IN THIS ISSUE: Ctheory; Clover Leary; Sonya Rapoport; subRosa; Eugene Thacker; YOUgenics.

How are your theory chops these days? Well, better get in shape because new action figures of Michel Foucault and Anthony Giddens are fully armed and ready to go into rhetorical battle. Even though the webpage initially may not seem relevant to net art, it is as close as it gets; this page is a conceptual spoof on the theoreticians. I admit I would quickly buy the figures if these were actually available. The page is part of Theory.org.uk, a resource specializing in contemporary theory. And while you are at it, make sure to check out the theory trading cards section.

Mailinglist nettime-l splits it's list. From now on you can subscribe yourself to nettime-l (the discussion list) and nettime-ann. The last is a list for announcers of things like netart works, events, festivals, etc. The announcers that from this moment on will go to nettime-ann came up till now always in a digested form to the nettime-l subscribers. Just lets not hope that this is just another strategy by the moderators to get rid of all those "unwanted" announcers, for me the most important reason to keep subscribed to nettime. Don't let us forget that nettime, which once started as a list for artists and activists, did this split trick already one time before. This was when they split nettime in a moderated and unmoderated version. The last started after complaints that interesting mail did not make it to the list. Unfortunately a short while after it's introduction the unmoderated version developed into a sort of email ghetto. It was killed not so long ago by the nettime team because of too much spam.
